Essay quiz type

Essay quiz type allows you to create questions that require students to provide detailed written responses. This format is ideal for assessing critical thinking, comprehension, and the ability to articulate complex ideas. By composing their answers, students demonstrate their depth of understanding in a more expressive and individualized manner.

Creating essay quiz question

To create essay quiz question:

Access Courses Plus app: Open Courses Plus app and navigate to My courses tab. From the list of courses, select desired course or create a new one.

Add a new quiz: In the course editor, click on Add quiz.

Configure quiz details: Fill in the quiz fields — provide a name and select the question type as Essay. Add your question prompt to guide students on expected response. Once completed, click the Save button.

Important Note: If a quiz contains an Essay question, no additional questions can be added to that quiz. Attempting to add essay question to existing quiz with other question types will prompt a modal warning that all existing questions will be deleted if you proceed.

Student experience with essay questions

When students encounter an Essay question, they will see a text area with a character limit of 2000 characters. A character counter below the text area helps them track their input. After composing their response, students can submit it by clicking the Send button. Upon submission, a confirmation message will inform them that their response has been sent for review.

Admin review of essay submissions

Unapproved essays appear in the Settings - Quiz tab. The administrator can choose whether to approve them or not.

Once approved, the results will be available on My courses > Students > See quiz results
