Add a subscription to your community

You can sell access to your Mega Community community by subscription with our Subscriptions Plus app

In this article:

Create a paid community

  1. Open Mega Community → Communities and click Create community. For more details, see Create a community on Shopify.

  1. Enter the Title and Description of your community.
  2. In Access type, select Paid and enter the price. Later, you can turn off the one-time purchase and sell access by subscription only — see the last step of the theme section below.
  3. Click Save. Mega Community automatically creates a Shopify product for your community — you'll add the subscription to it in the next section.

Create a subscription plan

  1. Open Subscriptions Plus and, in Create new subscription plan, click Create a plan.

  1. Enter a plan name, e.g. Community subscription, and click Choose a product for subscription. The plan name is for internal use only and isn't visible to customers.

  1. Select your community's product and click Select.

  1. Click Next step.

  1. Set up the subscription rules — for example, a Monthly interval with a Fixed value price — and click Create subscription. The preview on the right shows how the subscription options will look on the community's product page. All settings are described in the Subscriptions Plus app article.

Add the subscription block to your theme

  1. On the Subscriptions Plus dashboard, in Add subscriptions plus app block to your active theme, click Edit your theme.

  1. The theme editor opens with the Subscriptions block already added to the product template. Click Save in the top-right corner.

  1. Optionally, to sell access by subscription only, open Products and select your community's product. In Purchase options, check Only sell this product with these purchase options and save the product. The one-time purchase option disappears from the product page.

Cancel a subscription and remove access

Please note: If a member cancels their subscription themselves — for example, from their orders page — they lose access to the community right away, and you don't need to do anything.

If you cancel a subscription yourself in Subscriptions Plus, one more step is needed to remove the member's access: a Shopify Flow workflow that adds a special restriction tag to the customer. Create the workflow once, and it will work for every cancellation.

  1. Open your community in Mega Community → Communities and copy the Tag to restrict access to this community from the Tags section.

  1. In Shopify Flow, create a workflow and turn it on:

  • Trigger — Subscription contract updated.
  • Condition — Subscription contract status is equal to CANCELLED.
  • Action — Add customer tags with the tag you copied in step 1.

Important: This workflow adds the restriction tag whenever any subscription in your store is cancelled. If you sell several subscription-based communities or other subscriptions, cancelling any of them will also block the customer's access to this community.

  1. To cancel a subscription, open Subscriptions Plus → Subscriptions, click Actions next to the subscription and select Cancel subscription. The workflow adds the restriction tag to the customer, and they lose access to the community.

Please note: Access changes apply within 10 minutes after the tag is assigned.

That's it — your community now sells access by subscription, with recurring payments through Subscriptions Plus and access removed when a subscription is cancelled. If you have any questions, we're always happy to help.
